This is a classic English pitcher form, sometimes referred to as a "baluster jug". These were fired in the soda kiln during our Spring 2025 firing. Soda firing is a process where a solution of sodium carbonate is sprayed into the kiln at top temperature of 2350° F. At this intense heat, a chemical reaction occurs where the sodium bonds to the silica in the clay, and forms a coating of glass over everything in the kiln. On unglazed portions, it ranges from a juicy, orange peel surface, to one that just has flashes of color. On the glazed portions, a fine layer of glass adds to the depth and character of the glaze.
