Footed bowls are made in a 2 step process. First, the pot is thrown by hand, leaving some extra clay at the bottom that will later be cut away to make a foot. Once the pot is at the "leather hard" stage, it can be turned upside down on the wheel, to carefully shave away the excess clay and reveal the foot. The form of a footed bowl is a bit more graceful that one with a flat bottom, and will also be a bit lighter in weight due to the clay that was removed in the process.
