Moon jars are both satisfying and challenging to throw — getting the proportions just right between height and form is a quiet puzzle I never tire of solving.
The idea of making a miniature moon jar for our Holiday Preorder came almost by chance, but the form has both the beauty and function I value. Made from Verdigris Marbled Clay, each one carries its own rhythm and depth — no two are alike. They can serve as small vases or stand on their own as sculptural pieces.
Moon jars have a long tradition in Korea, first created during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). Originally made of pure white porcelain and fired in wood kilns at temperatures above 2,370°F, their softly spherical shape — with a mouth slightly wider than the base — gives the impression of floating weightlessly. Today, they remain an enduring symbol of Korean artistry and balance, admired by potters and collectors around the world.

Our stoneware is fired to 2,300°F and is completely watertight. However, if you’re placing a flower-filled jar on fine furniture, we recommend a cork or woven mat beneath it to prevent any condensation from marring the surface.
