Closed forms like this have always fascinated me. They’re deceptively complex to throw — the clay must keep an even thickness as it’s gently collared inward. Yet when it works, the result is deeply satisfying: a quiet, rounded shape that feels complete in the hand and pleasing to the eye.

Marbled pottery—often called agateware—has captivated makers and collectors for millennia. The Romans first explored its swirling patterns, a tradition later revived in Tang-dynasty China and Persian workshops. In the 18th century, Josiah Wedgwood brought the technique to new refinement in England.

By folding together contrasting clays, potters let the material’s natural flow create stone-like veining. The outcome is always unique — no two pieces will ever share the same rhythm of color and motion.

Our Verdigris Marble carries this legacy forward. Each form is hand-thrown by Peter, and every swirl is a singular expression of the clay moving under his hands.
