This pitcher is inspired by baluster pitchers of the medieval time period.  Wonderful examples of these can be found at the Museum of the City of London.  These forms always struck me as simple, graceful and elegant.  Soda firing gives them a varied, rich surface that to me, feels true to the originals.

Marbled pottery—often called agateware—has captivated makers and collectors for centuries. By folding together contrasting clays, potters allow the clay’s natural movement to form stone-like veining. The result is always singular and unrepeatable: no two pieces will ever share the same the same landscape of color and form.

This piece has been soda fired, adding a distinctive surface character. As the vaporized soda interacts with the clay at high heat, it creates subtle washes of color and a gently glazed sheen—effects rarely seen in traditional marbled pottery.
