southwestern Wisconsin, to ply his trade as a potter. The area was booming due to the mining of lead and tin, and needed tradesmen to help supply household articles for the growing population. Klais Work Pots with Dentil Rim, Set of 4

Marbled pottery, also referred to sometimes as agateware, has ancient roots, going all the way back to the Roman Empire (1st century BC to the 5th century AD). Examples of marbled ware can also be found in pottery of the Tang Dynasty in China, (618-907 AD) the Persians, (9th to 13th centuries AD) and in 18th century Europe it gained wide popularity when taken to new heights by Josiah Wedgewood. Simply put, marbleware uses a technique of combining contrasting colors of clay together, with the natural movement of each clay color creating a flowing pattern that is reminiscent of marble. There are an infinite number of patterns that can be created this way, and no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

I've done my marbled work pots in the simplest manner, just using equal amounts of white and red clay, to throw on the wheel into the most utilitarian of English garden pots. The pattern that emerges will be a function of how the 2 halves were positioned on the wheel as to the exact pattern, or the prominence of one color over another. I love the natural and spontaneous way in which the pattern evolves, and they make very handsome pots for herbs or succulents.

We're offering these in sets of 4, with either a copper tray or a galvanized, white patina tray. Both referred to sometimes as agateware, has ancient roots, going all the way back to the Roman Empire (1st century BC to the 5th century AD). Examples of marbled ware can also be found in pottery of the Tang Dynasty in China, (618-907 AD) the Persians, (9th to 13th centuries AD) and in 18th century Europe it gained wide popularity when taken to new heights by Josiah Wedgewood. Simply put, marble ware uses a technique of combining contrasting colors of clay together, with the natural movement of each clay color creating a flowing pattern that is reminiscent of marble. There are an infinite number of patterns that can be created this way, and no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

Handthrown by Peter in Rockdale, White clay develops a rich, natural patina after some time outside.

Rhubarb Forcers are familiar to English gardeners, but not as much to their cousins here in America. A rhubarb forcer is used to jump start rhubarb in the early spring, when the nights are still cold. Covering the rhubarb shoots when they first emerge will keep them from getting damaged by frost. During the day, the lid is left off to let the plant get some sunlight, but not too much. Depriving the plant of sunlight decreases the photosynthesis, which keeps the rhubarb pale, and also makes it stretch to get more sunlight. The result is a more delicate stalk that has less bitterness than non-forced rhubarb. For folks who don't grow rhubarb, the shape is a nice piece of garden ornament that speaks to an earlier time.

Rhubarb Forcers are some of the most labor intensive pieces I make, but they're also very satisfying to make. It is a multi-step process that takes 3-4 days to complete the steps. It's rare to find a studio potter in the USA who is making these.

You can find a few videos of the steps involved on my Instagram page, using the links below:

Rhubarb Forcer Step #1

Rhubarb Forcer Step #2

Rhubarb Forcer Step #3

Handthrown by Peter in Rockdale, Wisconsin

Traditional red terracotta, fired to 2000° F.

Frostproof from delamination due to temperatures below freezing.
